If you’re looking to purchase a lift for your stairs, you might be asking yourself “which are the best stairlifts?“. It’s a good question because it’s a considerable investment and you want to know it’s going to last.
Here at UKStairlifts we know a thing or two about stairlifts. The “best” stair lift for you will always be up for debate depending on your needs and budget.
We put together this stairlift guide to help you make the right decision for you.
Some stairlifts are the best for smaller staircases – such as the Flow X stairlift, for example, which can fit a staircase as narrow as 61cm. Others, might be the “best” because of their hard wearing build quality and affordability. We recommend our reconditioned stairlifts because they can shave a large chunk off the cost.
We only choose the best stairlifts to recondition because we believe in providing the best quality stairlifts at an affordable price.
Which Are The Best Stairlifts? Flow X
The Flow X from Access BDD (Formerly Thyssen) is definitely one of the top stairlifts you can get. It’s not only super thin and adaptable to narrow and awkward staircases, but it has patented technology. This allows it to manoeuvre on stairs which are unaccessible to some stairlifts. Checkout a recent case study where we fitted a Flow X to a very narrow staircase here.
We can even offer the Flow X as a reconditioned model when available. The Flow X is a more expensive model because of the technology and adaptability it offers. If you’re on a budget, and it’s suitable for your stair case, we also recommend Stannah stairlifts.
Which Are The Best Stairlifts? Stannah

Here’s a reconditioned Stannah 600 going in on a straight staircase.
Stannah stairlifts are a household name and they offer some of the best stairlifts in build quality and reliability. We use them specifically because they give us fewer problems over the longer term than (often cheaper) models.
Stannah are built with accessibility in mind too, and although they aren’t quite as nimble as the Flow X, they often get the job done, and at a cheaper cost than the Flow X. So if your staircase is able, we definitely recommend a Stannah.
Which Are The Best Stair Lifts – Heavy Weight Stairlifts
There’s often other considerations to take into account when sizing up a stairlift – such as the weight capacity. Most stairlifts can take a weight limit from around 19-25 stone. But if the user is any heavier, or they are pushing the limits of a standard stairlift, they might need a heavy weight, bariatric stairlift.
Heavy weight stairlifts are designed to hold a larger person and take up to 30 stone in weight. However, this can mean the stairlifts are less compatible with difficult and awkward staircases. We use the Platinum Ultimate stairlift and Bruno heavy weight stairlifts and consider these the best heavy weight models. We don’t however offer reconditioned heavy weight stairlifts for safety reasons.

Which Are The Best Stair Lifts – Affordability
We believe the best stair lifts for affordability are our reconditioned stairlifts because they offer the best value overall and carry a 2 year warranty. They can also usually be fitted more quickly than brand new stairlifts because they are already available in stock, without having to wait for the manufacturer.
Buying a reconditioned stairlift can be up to 50% cheaper than buying one brand new. However a newer model has the benefits of a longer warranty and newer parts which can be easier to replace.
Straight Or Curved?
The main things to consider first is your staircase type: straight or curved, then your budget. If you have a difficult or narrow staircase you might need a specific model which is designed to cope with difficult spaces – see our post on compact stairlifts. If you have any other needs such as a heavy duty stairlift for a larger user, that’s also something to consider when weighing up your options.
