The Thyssen Flow stairlift is one of our personal favourites; not just because of it’s looks, but also what it can do. The Thyssen Flow stairlift is a market leader in terms of it’s manoeuvrability. Its patented technology allows it to move seamlessly around awkward obstacles without missing a step – no pun intended! The single rail is not only more appealing to the eye, but also allows installations to happen around awkward and difficult staircase setups.
Here’s two of our installations. On the left is a Flow X, and on the right is the Flow 2a; the Flow X’s predecessor. In the right hand picture you can clearly see the “drop nose” rail beneath the chair avoiding a doorway to the left.

The left hand picture shows the rail curving round the bannister rail to clear the staircase, and park to the left, out of the way.

Thyssenkrupp are the manufacturers of the Flow stairlift range. They now have a different brand name under which their products are sold and marketed: Access BDD. Access BDD is the successor brand to Thyssenkrupp’s home solutions division.
Their stairlifts include the Flow X stairlift, Flow 2 and the Flow 2 a (for curved stairs). They also have the Thyssen Homeglide, for straight stairs.

Here at Uk Stairlifts, we predominantly use their stairlifts for difficult and narrow stairs, where other stairlifts can’t be installed. The Flow X has a patented ASL technology (Advanced Swivel and Levelling). This means it can move more fluidly around obstacles which would present more problems for less agile machines. The innovative design means the chair faces the user downstairs, unlike many traditional stairlifts.
This creates more room when there’s a tight, or awkward staircase.
The Flow Stairlift From Thyssen
The Flow range of stairlifts from Thyssen has helped out many people with mobility in their homes. Without this technology, many people simply wouldn’t be able to use their stairs, or stay in the home they love!
Standard stairlifts simply can’t be fitted on every staircase, particularly those which present problems such as doorways, corridors and other obstacles. While some users simply like the appearance of the Flow stairlifts, most of our customers choose these lifts out of necessity.

The main problem for a standard stairlift is the outward facing chair ride position. This sets the stage for problems when the staircase is too narrow! The leg to back measurement will determine whether a stairlift will fit on your stairs.
Other issues can include doors too close to the stairs, or corridors and radiators. These can be a problem if a stairlift needs a “run on” rail in order to park/turn.
The Flow series stairlifts get around these problems by facing the user downstairs/upstairs, and by having a single rail which can avoid blocking areas when necessary.

Thyssen Flow Stairlift – ASL (Advanced Swivel & Levelling)
Another issue faced by traditional stairlifts is manoeuvring around obstacles such as newel posts and tight corners. With a very narrow staircase, with a tight turn, many stairlifts can’t be fitted. The ASL tech’ means that the Flow stairlift can operate where many other makes and models simply cannot. Here’s an installation we carried out in Yorkshire with a Flow X. In this scenario, there were 3 doorways at the top of the stairs and a radiator to contend with!
No other stairlift could have managed this situation, and even with the Flow X it was touch-and-go as to whether it would fit!
