What is the average cost of a stairlift installation? Stairlift installation cost can vary dramatically according to your staircase type and installation needs. However, here’s a quick breakdown of the range of starting costs.

On average, you can expect to pay between £2000 and £4000 for a stairlift on an average staircase. With a more expensive machine, you can expect the price to rise. As you can see from the chart above too, curved staircases are more expensive than straight ones for an installation and you can save quite a bit with reconditioned stairlifts.
Average Cost Of Stairlift Installation – Straight Stairlift Examples
Here’s a couple of examples of stairlifts we have installed on straight stairs. Straight stairs are simpler fittings because the rail needs less specification on a straight staircase. The stairlifts themselves too are simpler because they only need to follow a straight line path, and are less complicated. The average cost of a straight stairlift is between £1,500 and £3,500. Here’s a couple of example fittings which we carried out with their cost.

This one is a Stannah 600 (reconditioned) which was £1550 including a 2 year no exclusion warranty. This was a straight stairlift fitted to a curved stairs. See the installation of this one on our YouTube video. See also 8 ways to save money on a stairlift.
Here’s another straight stairlift, again a Stannah 600 (reconditioned).

This straight stairlift had an auto-swivel assisted footplate and was £1550. With a reconditioned stairlift you can save between 20-40% of the cost of a brand new stairlift.
More Complex Stairlifts – Curved and Narrow Stairs
With more complicated staircase layouts, you might need a more expensive machine which is designed to deal with tighter curves, and be more nimble. Here’s an example of a more tricky fitting we did for a customer where we needed a more advanced stairlift. See also stairlifts for narrow stairs.

This staircase was not only curved, but also very narrow. With the rail and tight corner, only a specialist stairlift would work on this staircase. We used a Thyssen Flow 2a here with a 180 mid flight wrap internal steep wrap, a full auto swivel (fully programmable) and a small footplate. This one was £4250 (reconditioned). (brand new around £6750).

Here’s another one of our fittings and this is a Stannah 260 (refurbished) for a curved staircase. This installation was £3,850. It had a bottom 180 degree internal parking wrap and 90 degree internal incline bend, a flush landing finish & powered swivel.
Very Narrow Staircases
Here’s another of our installations on a very narrow staircase. This one was more tricky so again we needed a more sophisticated stairlift – we used the Flow 2a on this one.

This installation was £4,650 and this was a refurbished stairlift. It had a bottom internal drop nose bend, a top 180 degree landing parking wrap with run on, it had a fully programmable auto-swivel, and a small footplate. Brand new this would be around (£6950.)
Summary
So, as you can see, the price of a stairlift can vary quite a bit depending on:
- Whether your stairs are curved or straight
- The specifications needed and whether you need a specialist stairlift (e.g. for narrow stairs).
- Whether you want a new stairlift or a reconditioned model.
There’s also more to consider if you are pushing the weight limit on a stairlift as you may need a heavy duty stairlift which are more costly.
