Stairlift Stuck Halfway?
Is your stairlift is stuck halfway up (or down) the stairs? Don’t panic! It’s actually one of the most common issues stairlift users experience. In most cases, it’s easy to fix.
At UK Stairlifts, we’ve helped hundreds of customers get their stairlifts moving again safely and quickly. Here’s a simple guide on what to do if your stairlift is stuck halfway.

1. Stairlift Stuck Halfway – Stay Calm and Check the Basics
Before doing anything else, make sure you’re safe. Stay seated and don’t try to force the stairlift to move manually.
Now check the basics:
-
✅ Is the key switch turned on? (It’s usually on the armrest or near the base of the lift.)
-
✅ Are you pressing the correct direction button or joystick?
-
✅ Is the stairlift fully in travel mode? (Ensure the seat and armrests are properly folded down and locked.)
-
✅ Has anything blocked the stairlift track? (Look for small objects, cables, or even pet toys!) A sensor may have been triggered: try gently tapping the side panels and try again.
Sometimes, the simplest checks solve the issue instantly.

2. Stairlift Stuck Halfway – Make Sure There’s Power
If your stairlift is completely unresponsive, it might not be receiving power.
Try these quick steps:
-
🔌 Check the main power switch is turned on.
-
⚡ Make sure there’s no power cut in your home – check your fuse box and trip switches, a power cut or surge may have tripped your circuit breaker, leaving the stairlift off at the mains.
-
🪫 Look for a battery warning light — if your stairlift has been off the charge point for a long time, the batteries may have drained.
If the power’s been off for a while, allow the batteries to recharge for a few hours before trying again.
3. Stairlift Stuck Halfway – Check for Obstructions on the Track

Most stairlifts are fitted with safety sensors that stop the lift automatically if something blocks the track.
Have a look for:
-
Small objects or debris on the rail
-
Loose carpets or cables touching the lift
-
Anything caught near the footrest
Once cleared, try pressing and holding the travel button again — the stairlift should resume normal operation. If a sensor panel has been tripped, it can be release by gently tapping.
4. Listen for Beeping or Flashing Lights
Modern stairlifts often use beeps or light codes to tell you what’s wrong.
For example:
-
Continuous beeping = the stairlift isn’t on its charging point
-
Flashing lights = a safety sensor has been triggered
-
No lights or sound = power issue
If your stairlift manual is available, check what the signal means — it can help you (or an engineer) identify the problem faster.
5. Reset the Stairlift
Most stairlifts have a simple reset switch or circuit breaker.
Try switching the stairlift off for 30 seconds and then back on again. This can often reset the system and clear minor faults.
If you’re unsure where the reset switch is, refer to your model’s manual or contact us for guidance.
6. Call an Independent Stairlift Engineer

If your stairlift is still stuck halfway after these steps, it’s best to call a qualified engineer to inspect it safely.
At UK Stairlifts, our chief engineer Scott Whitworth has over 25 years of experience in stairlift installation and repair. We can diagnose issues with all major brands — from Stannah and Acorn to Thyssen and Brooks — and get you moving again quickly.
🚗 Same-day callouts available in most areas across the UK.
7. Don’t Try to Move It Manually
It might be tempting to push or pull the stairlift along the rail, but doing so could damage the motor or track.
Always wait for a trained engineer to handle it — they’ll have the right tools and experience to fix the problem safely.
Preventing Future Problems
If your stairlift has stuck, there’s a few things you can do to prevent it happening again in the future.
-
Keep the track clear of dust and debris, regularly clean the rail
-
Always park it on the charge point when not in use
-
Book annual servicing with a trusted engineer
-
Don’t ignore warning sounds or lights — they’re there for a reason!
- Keep it plugged in at the mains – stairlifts trickle charge from the mains electricity. If you turn off the mains the battery will run flat and this can shorten the battery life.
