Looking for a stairlift for a spiral staircase? Modern stairlifts are more than capable of climbing even the most awkward staircases!
Most people, when they think of a stairlift, imagine a clunky outward facing chair, fixed to a straight rail.
But modern day innovations have changed the face of the stairlift. Nowadays, modern stairlifts can navigate tight corners and even very narrow staircases.
But the spiral staircase presents perhaps the greatest challenge for stairlift users.
Stairlift For Spiral Staircase
Take a look at the Flow 2 stairlift from ThyssenKrupp – one of the most advanced stairlifts today and capable of rotating while climbing. This gives it a massive edge over traditional stairlifts which can only ascend or descend while facing outwards from the rail.
The Flow 2 can navigate straight or curved staircases and is particularly suited to awkward or difficult staircases such as a spiral staircase.
Chairlift For Spiral Staircase
Spiral Staircase Lift
The innovative design of the Thyssen Krupp Flow 2 stairlift means that it rotates to allow your legs to face downwards while ascending the stairs.
This is one of the most useful features of modern day stairlifts because it accommodates spiral staircases, curved staircases and narrow and generally awkward staircases which would have previously been difficult or impossible to fit.
Here’s another picture of the Flow 2 stairlift on another narrow staircase:
As you can see, the downward facing position allows much greater room while travelling. In a traditional stairlift (with outward facing position), the staircase pictured simply wouldn’t have the clearance space for the fitting of a stairlift.
With a spiral stair lift, there’s very little room for your legs and with a traditional stairlift, it wouldn’t be possible to install. But this particular model, and also the Flow X stairlift by Thyssen make it possible.
Stairlift For Spiral Staircase – Weight Limit?
Fitting a spiral staircase with a stairlift can make it possible for someone with mobility issues to use a staircase. Without one it would become obsolete for them.
However, the weight capacity of a stairlift is reduced when using a spiral staircase. Most stairlifts are made to take a load capacity from 17 to 21 stone. However, with a spiral staircase, the angle of the rail is likely to reduce this. A spiral staircase will use a steeper rail configuration.
With a steeper rail, greater stress is placed on the motor driving the stairlift. So if you’re on the higher level of the weight limit, this can present a problem.
Summary
So if you’re looking for a stairlift for a spiral staircase, you’re in luck! We recommend one of the curved stairlifts in the Thyssen Stairlifts range. The Flow 2 stairlift or the Flow X stairlift models are perfect.
Both these models can easily navigate awkward staircases including spiral staircases and very narrow staircases. With a spiral staircase, the weight limit is likely to be affected so check with our team if you have any concerns.
