If you’re looking for a stair lift for steep stairs, you’re in the right place. We’ve encountered many awkward, steep, narrow or difficult staircases which we’ve installed stairlifts on. In some cases, other companies have told the customer it can’t be done, or recommended us personally.
So, if you have a challenging staircase, we want to hear from you!

Stair Lift For Steep Stairs
Here’s a stairlift installation we carried out in Marsden, Yorkshire. As you can see from the picture, the rail was very steep to get around the problem of the corner stairs near the top, and the headroom. This was to lift the stairlift up high enough so the knees wouldn’t clash with the wall, as it turned the corner, but also so the user could avoid clashing with the low ceiling.

The steep rail can make a stairlift slow down. It can even cause the weight limit to decrease, because the load increases.

This video shows the engineer testing out the stairlift after installation:
Stairlift For Steep Stairs – Spiral Staircases
Spiral stairs are notoriously steep and UKStairlifts have installed a number of these too! Here’s a few from our collection:

We even installed a four-storey spiral staircase with a stairlift, which was our largest and most expensive installation to date!

Here’s another spiral staircase installation which was another steep one:

Staircase Pitch And Steep Stairlifts
There are some issues we have encountered with very steep staircases. As mentioned previously, a very steep staircase can change the weight limit of a stairlift, due to the increased load. Most stairlifts are calibrated to carry up to 19 stone in weight, so most are suitable for most users. But if you’re over this weight, you may require a heavy duty stairlift. Heavy duty stairlifts can carry up to 30 stone in weight, however, with a particularly steep staircase, this can affect their ability because the pitch of the stairs adds to the load.
Most UK staircases are pitched at up to 42 degrees due to building regulations. However, some older buildings have steeper staircases, which were installed before new building reg’s limited their use. Or if you have an attic room, your staircase may be steeper.

However steep your staircase is, there’s usually a solution. Give us a call on 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page and leave us a message. We offer free surveys throughout the UK.
Steep Stair Stairlifts – Compatibility
Most stairlifts are capable of being installed on steep staircases of between 30 and 50 degrees pitch. With steeper stairs, such as with loft stairs for example, you may need a heavy duty stairlift due to the increase in load.
Here’s a couple of steep installations we carried out using the Flow X stairlift. This stairlift is one of the most versatile and our “go-to” for when things get tricky! It’s a very clever stairlift and is more accomodating than some other models, particularly for tricky situations where there’s a lack of space. See also stairlifts for very narrow stairs.
