Small Space Standing Stair Lifts
If you have trouble bending your legs, or have limited space and prefer to stand, small space standing stair lifts might be a solution for you. Here’s a couple of pictures of standing stairlifts. As you can see, it fits snugly against the wall and is fairly unobtrusive. The foot rest folds away and the lift sits against the wall not taking up much space.

Small Space Standing Stair Lifts – Who Uses Standing Stairlifts?
A stairlift is quite an investment and it’s important to get the right stairlift first time! Standing stairlifts are often chosen because the user cannot bend their feet back behind their knees, or they have trouble sitting. This means the back to toe measurement becomes the critical measurement. For most stairlift installations, it is the back to knee measurement which is critical.
Also if there is limited space on your stairs, a standing lift may be a solution. Standing stairlifts are also chosen by those who are in need of help with the stairs, but are fit enough to remain standing, and whose condition is unlikely to worsen.
But it is important that the stairlift is future-proofed too. Should your condition deteriorate, and you are unable to stand, it would render the stairlift unusable.

Problems With Standing Stair Lifts
There can be issues with a standing stairlift. For example, with a standing stair lift, the user stands on the platform. This generally isn’t an issue with straight standing stairlifts. But in the case of a curved staircase, this can present problems. For example, if there is a low ceiling (bulk-head) the stairlift must clear the stair nose from the footplate while still giving you head room to clear the ceiling.
This can sometimes become an issue, because standing up while travelling gives less head clearance. In the picture below you can see the ceiling is pretty close to the rail. This would have been too close for the installation of a standing stairlift.

Other Considerations For A Standing Lift
Another option if you’re considering a standing stairlift is choosing a seated stairlift which has a lot of room for seat adjustment. For example, the Stannah 600 has scope for large adjustment when it comes to the seated position. This can give you the height you may need to straighten your legs, giving you more room, should that be the issue.

Small Space Standing Stair Lifts – Why a Sitting Stairlift Might Be the Better Choice
This is definitely a contender to the small space standing stair lift.
Standing stairlifts are designed for users who have difficulty bending their knees. While they can be a solution for some, they may not always be the best option. Here’s why:
-
Future-proofing – Over time, standing for long periods might become difficult. A seated stairlift ensures long-term comfort and practicality.
-
Stability and safety – Sitting stairlifts provide more support, reducing the risk of balance issues while in motion.
-
Compact and space-saving designs – Modern seated stairlifts, like the Flow X, fold neatly away when not in use, making them just as space-efficient as standing models.
- Standing on a stairlift can present problems for head clearance, particularly if there’s a low ceiling.

Small Space Standing Stair Lifts Vs. The Flow X
If you’re looking for a stairlift that’s compact and adaptable, the Flow X stairlift is an excellent alternative to a standing model. It’s designed to navigate even the most challenging staircases, including those with narrow widths, tight turns, and awkward layouts.
It takes up very little room when not in use too – folding down to take up minimum space.

Key Benefits of the Flow X:
-
Fits narrow stairs – Works on staircases as narrow as 61cm wide.
-
Folds down neatly – When not in use, it folds to just 38cm flat, ensuring minimal obstruction.
-
Advanced Swivel and Levelling (ASL) technology – The seat and footrest automatically adjust as you travel, allowing for smoother navigation through small spaces.
-
Comfortable and secure – Offers ergonomic seating, reducing strain on the body.
