Some homes require a heavy duty stairlift on narrow stairs. You’ll need a heavy duty stairlift if you’re over the weight capacity of a particular model of stairlift. That capacity varies from between 19 and 25 stone, depending on the model of stairlift. For a very narrow staircase, we often recommend the Flow X stairlift, which has a weight capacity of 19 stone.
If you’re over this weight limit, you’ll need a heavier duty stairlift such as the Stannah 600 straight stairlift (25 stone limit) or the Platinum Ultimate (25 stone) or the Bruno (30 stone) stairlift.
As the weight capacity of a stairlift increases, its ability to be installed on a difficult/awkward staircase is more limited. The Bruno, for example has the heaviest limit of 30 stone. But this is a much more sturdy rail system and the chair is much larger too.
Here’s a picture of the Bruno 30 stone stairlift. Because of this, a heavy duty stairlift is often less suitable for very narrow staircase.

Can A Heavy Duty Stairlift Fit On Narrow Stairs?
The Platinum Ultimate is often the answer when you need a heavy duty stairlift and you have a narrow staircase. With a straight staircase, the Stannah 600 is often the best answer. This stairlift has a capacity of 25 stone. However, that’s no good if your staircase is curved. In this situation we recommend the Platinum.
Here’s a Platinum Ultimate stairlift on a curved staircase. It has a single rail and can face downstairs/upstairs which gives you more legroom on a narrow staircase. Weight capacity of the Platinum is 25 stone.

Although the Ultimate isn’t as agile as the Flow X stairlift for narrow stairs, it’s a great option if you need a heavy duty option and you’re over the 19 stone limit of the Flow.

What’s right for You?
- Choose the Stannah 600 if you have a straight staircase and need a reliable heavy-duty stairlift with a 25 stone weight limit.
- Choose the Flow X if your staircase is narrow, steep or has awkward bends. Although its weight limit is 19 stone, its rotating seat makes it one of the best stairlifts for difficult staircases.
- Choose the Platinum Ultimate if you need both a 25 stone capacity and a stairlift capable of fitting many narrow or curved staircases.
- Choose the Bruno Elite HD if maximum carrying capacity is your priority. With a 30 stone (190kg) limit, it’s our preferred solution for heavier users, although it generally requires a wider staircase than the Flow X or Platinum Ultimate.
