If you are in need of an attic stair lift, you might be wondering whether it’s a possibility. Well, as with any stairlift, it all depends on the dimensions of the stairs. With an attic stairs, there’s also the possibility that your staircase is one which slides down from the ceiling. If this is the case, we can’t install a stairlift if the staircase is a folding/moving one.

This kind of staircase is undoable for a stairlift
But with a solid, wooden staircase which leads to the attic, it can usually be done. We have encountered many staircases which lead to an attic room and fitted stairlifts several of them. Let’s have a look at this in more detail in this post.
Attic Stair Lift – Is It A Wooden Staircase?
99% of the time if you have a wooden staircase leading up to your attic room, we can install a stairlift. In some cases you may require a specialist stairlift such as the Thyssen stairlift. Thyssen stairlifts are a higher priced stairlifts which we would recommend for you if another model couldn’t be installed. In fact, we had an attic stairlift enquiry in which a Thyssen was required, but the client decided not to pursue it in the end.
Here’s an image of a Thyssen stairlift on an attic stairs. As you can see, it’s super small and fold away to allow other home users to use the stairs unencumbered.

Attic Stair Lift – Types Of Stairs
Attic stairs are typically narrower and often steeper than standard household steps. If your staircase is steeper than around 72 degrees, it can present a problem. Even nimble stairlifts such as the Flow X can struggle when the pitch of the staircase is extremely steep. This becomes even more of a problem if you’re pushing the weight limit of a stairlift – which is 19 stone for the Flow stairlift.
When a staircase is particularly narrow, we will recommend the Flow X stairlift. This and older Flow models (which can be purchased as reconditioned models) can be used in this scenario. With a straight staircase we might be able to use a different model, such as the Stannah 600.
Whether or not a stairlift is feasible for your stairs will depend on a survey which we offer free of charge and with no obligation to purchase. Give us a call on 0800 046 3438 to arrange one.
Summary
With certain types of attic stairs it is possible to install a stairlift. However, they would need to be static steps, rather than the folding down type. Even if your staircase is particularly narrow or steep, you may still be able to get a stairlift installation.
To determine whether you can install a stairlift on your attic stairs, we would need to ascertain that you have a solid, wooden flight of stairs and carry out a home survey.
We offer free, no-obligation surveys through the Uk and can call out on short notice depending on how busy we are and where you are in the country. Give us a call on 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page here.
