What does a stair elevator cost? The average cost of a stair elevator, or a “stairlift”, is around £2,300 for a straight stairlift and £4,900 for a curved stairlift. You’re generally looking at between £1500 to £8000, though, depending on the specification of your stairlift itself and your staircase setup.
Our lowest cost stairlifts are our reconditioned straight stairlifts which start at £1,250. But if you’re buying new, prices start at £1,850 for a straight stairlift. If you need a curved stairlift, expect to pay more. Our curved stairlift prices start at £3,000 for a reconditioned curved stairlift. When buying new, a curved stairlift will cost from £4,990.
Stair Elevator Cost – Other Considerations
Buying a new or a reconditioned stairlift can make a lot of difference in cost. That’s why our reconditioned stairlifts are very popular with our customers. You can save up to 50% if you buy a reconditioned stairlift as opposed to a brand new model.
But also your stairlift make and model is a big factor in price. For example, if you have a very narrow or difficult staircase, you may need a more expensive model which caters for your particular set of stairs. In a recent case study, a company passed a customer over to us because they didn’t have a stairlift which would fit.
We used a Flow 2 Stairlift – which is a high specification stairlift used for difficult and awkward stairs. See our post on Flow X stairlift price for details. The Flow X is the more recent model which has replaced the Flow 2 stairlift. Both are available as reconditioned models (when available). Reconditioned Flow X models start from £4,000 and new models start at £6,000.
Stair Elevator Cost – Heavy Duty Stairlifts
Heavy duty stairlifts too can considerably affect the price. If you’re heavier than average, you may need a heavy duty stairlift which can cope with a heavier load. Again, with greater specification there’s a larger price attached. Most stairlifts are capable of carrying anyone with a weight of up to 20-25 stone. But if you’re much heavier than that, or are pushing the limits, it might be worth getting a heavy duty stairlift.
Heavy duty stairlifts can lift loads of up to 30 stone, much heavier than the standard models. However, this means the lift can be more difficult to fit on some, more narrow staircases. Heavy duty stairlifts start at around £3,000 but the final cost will depend on your particular staircase configuration and requirements.
Stair Elevator Cost – Rail Configuration
Your stairlift rail is a big determining factor of the overall cost of a stair elevator. With a simple configuration, for a straight staircase, for example, you would expect to pay far less than for a winding staircase with many turns and a landing, for example.
Here’s a stairlift we installed for a customer which had multiple levels.
So in this case, the rail added up to be a large part of the overall cost. With this installation, a Flow X stairlift was used too, further adding to the cost. However, this stairlift was essential in order to be able to stop on multiple floors (where it could recharge).
We did a case study on this stairlift installation. You can read (the 3 floor stairlift fitting) here.
Quick Video
Here’s a quick time lapse video of a Stannah 260 (reconditioned) going in on a curved staircase.
Although this was a curved staircase, it was a relatively simple fitting. Using the reconditioned Stannah 260 meant the cost was lowered for this customer. All our reconditioned stairlifts are backed by our 2 year warranty.
