The maximum weight for a stair lift will depend on the particular make and model. However, most stairlifts have a maximum weight of 20–25 stone (280–350 lbs). It’s in this weight bracket where you’ll find the most choice of stairlift models.
Heavy-duty stairlifts have a higher weight capacity than standard stairlifts – up to 31 stone (434 lbs) in some cases. With a curved stairlift, the maximum capacity for a heavy duty stairlift is 30 stone.
Too much weight on a stairlift can lead to malfunctioning, bent or broken rails, or even complete breakdown. So it’s not worth taking the chance if you’re pushing the limit for weight on a stairlift.
Maximum Weight For A Stair Lift – Heavy Duty Stairlifts
Heavy duty stairlifts can cope with a maximum capacity of 31 stone on a straight rail, and 30 stone on a curved rail. Heavy duty stairlifts come with a larger seat and extended seatbelt length to cope with a larger passenger.
However, this can present problems as heavy duty stairlifts aren’t as manoeuvrable as some models which are more suited to narrow staircases, for example.
Here’s a Bruno heavy duty curved stairlift.
Maximum Weight For A Stairlift – Other Considerations
Maximum Weight For A Stair Lift – Standard Stairlifts
Most people are far below the maximum weight limit for a standard stairlift of between 20-25 stone. If you’re below this weight you don’t need to worry and can have a pick of stairlift makes and models.
But if you’re on the higher end of this weight limit, or approaching it, it’s worth choosing a heavy weight stairlift. Heavy weight stairlifts can carry heavier loads of up to 31 stone. Choosing a heavy weight stairlift might limit your choice of models but your safety is the most important factor when it comes to choosing a stairlift.
