Is there such a thing as free stairlifts for pensioners? The NHS does not directly provide stair lifts but can facilitate the process through local council assessments for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). This grant is crucial for those who find it challenging to navigate stairs due to disability or age-related issues.
Those meeting the eligibility criteria may be able to receive a stairlift through social services. This process involves several steps. The first step is an assessment of your mobility needs.
Free Stairlifts For Pensioners – Step 1
The first step is to reach out to your local council and request an assessment regarding your mobility. This is typically done through the council’s adult social services department.
Step 2 – Undergo an Assessment
An occupational therapist will then visit your home to assess your mobility needs. They will determine whether a stairlift is the appropriate solution. Things considered include the layout of your home, your physical condition, and whether a stairlift would improve your quality of life.
Free Stairlifts For Pensioners – Step 3
Following the assessment, the occupational therapist will make recommendations. If a stairlift is advised, they will also inform you about the funding options available. This might include support from social services or other grants.
Step 4 – Installation
If approval is given and funding secured, the next step is the installation of the stairlift. The council will usually arrange for a reputable supplier to carry out the installation, ensuring it meets your specific needs and adheres to all relevant safety standards.

Other Options – Second Hand Stairlift
If you don’t qualify for a free stairlift there’s other options you can consider. One is to purchase a reconditioned stairlift – which is usually much cheaper than a new stairlift. See also our page on the best alternatives to stairlifts.
Our cheapest stairlifts start at £990 for a reconditioned straight stairlift. Depending on your staircase, you may need either a straight or a curved stairlift. See our stairlift prices for more details.
