Looking for a space saving stair lift? Here at UK Stairlifts we specialise in fitting stairlifts in the most difficult and awkward places! The UK is renowned for narrow and awkward stairs! So we have learned to fit stairlifts in even the trickiest of places!
Take a look at this stairlift fitting, for example, which was carried out on a spiral staircase:
In this particular fitting we chose a Flow 2 stairlift. The Flow 2 and Flow X stairlift from Access BDD (formerly Thyssen), offer one of the best solutions for a space saving stair lift. It’s patented technology allows a clever turn and pivot mechanism to work simultaneously. This creates a super smooth ride, facing the user down the staircase, to allow for narrow staircases.
Space Saving Stair Lift – Platinum First Step Start
Here’s another ingenious design from a space saving stair lift – the Platinum Ultimate. This stair lift allows a first step start. Unlike many other stairlift rails the rail can start on the first step, rather than the ground floor.
This allows less clutter on the ground floor level if there are obstacles. The chair continues to the ground floor without the obstacle of the rail getting in the way.
It’s another ingenious design which allows for a stairlift to be placed almost anywhere – however much room you might have!
Space Saving Stair Lift – The Homeglide
Here’s another great design for homes with little space at the base of the stairs. The Thyssen Homeglide stair lift allows the rail to lift up as the chairlift moves up the stairs. This clears space on the ground floor for doorways or corridors.
The chair can even be stored on the rail, out of the way so as to leave more room at the ground level. It’s easily called from a remote control when you need it.
Speaking of clever rails, here’s another design which allows a stair lift to create more room. On the Thyssen Krupp Flow models (now Access BDD), the drop “nose” rail feature allows the rail to avoid doorways and corridors downstairs and be less obtrusive than a standard straight rail which might otherwise get in the way and become an obstacle.
Space Saving Stair Lifts – Foldable
Most modern stairlifts have folding seat, footrest and even arms with some models. This allows easy access to the stairs from other home users when the stair lift is not in use. But the Flow X model has taken this to another level. Checkout this folding mechanism of the Flow X stairlift which allows the chair to fold down to a tiny 38 cm in width when not in use:
It pivots to fold flat against the bannister rail to be unobtrusive. Here’s a flow 2 stairlift folded flat against the rail, showing how little space it takes up, even on a very narrow staircase.
Space Saving Stair Lift – Often Recommended
Although many stairlift makes and models can accommodate tight staircases and awkward small spaces, we often recommend the Thyssen (now Access BDD) Flow X stairlift because of it’s super compact design and dexterity. This stairlift uses Advanced Swivel Levelling (ASL) technology which allows the chair and footrest to pivot together, while ascending or descending and turning all simultaneously.
The downward facing design of the stairlift accommodates many staircases which would have been impossible previously. Here’s one we installed for a very tight staircase with a tight bend at the bottom:

Space Saving Stair Lifts
Modern stairlifts are designed with the small house in mind and most models can accommodate a narrow staircase. We also use the Stannah 600 stairlift and the Stannah 260 stairlift for our straight and curved staircases respectively. Here’s a Stannah 600 stairlift which can be a perfect solution for a straight staircase:
Arms, footrest and seat all fold up against the wall to accommodate other stair users when the lift is not in use. The Stannah 600 is unsuitable for stairs with bends and curves, however, although it makes a great solution if you have a straight staircase.
Here’s a Flow 2 stairlift on a narrow staircase. As you can see, the downward facing chair allows more leg room.
Here’s a rail being fitted to a staircase with a bend in it. For this particular stairlift fitting, we used the Flow 2 model of stairlift which is capable of turning in very tight spaces and avoiding bannister rails.
