Our “go-to” stairlifts for very tricky staircases is the Flow X stairlift from ThyssenKrupp (now Access BDD). This stairlift is a modern marvel which can be fitted on nearly any staircase. So if you’ve been turned down for a stairlift due to space issues, we can usually find a solution. Not every stairlift company uses this model and installation of them does require a certain expertise.
This isn’t always the model required however, and some of our other stairlifts will do the job too. For example, our reconditioned Stannah’s are often the best choice – especially if you want a more affordable option. Stannah’s are also great for some narrow staircases due to their excellent build quality, seat position and narrow chair back. This model often out-performs other models in space saving design for when it comes to narrow and tricky staircases where there’s little room for your knees!
Here’s a Stannah 260 on a fairly narrow staircase. This model can also use a smaller footplate for even narrower stairs than the one shown here.
Stairlift Specialists – Back To Knee Measurement
The back to knee measurement is the key length we need to know when it comes to deciding between stairlift models. With an outward facing stairlift, such as the one in the picture above, this becomes the critical measurement. If this measurement (plus the distance from the chair back to the wall) is greater than or equal to the width of a staircase, it cannot be fitted.
However, the solution comes in the form of the Flow X which gets around this particular problem. The Flow X faces the user downstairs, which allows for an installation on much narrow stairs. See also our post on stairlifts for narrow stairs.
