If you’re wondering whether you’re too heavy for a stairlift, this one’s for you. Most stairlifts have a weight capacity of up to 19 stone (120.6kg). So if you’re under that weight you’re probably going to be ok with most stairlift makes and models.
Certain makes of stairlift too are needed for very narrow stairs. For example, the Flow X is the best stairlift for very awkward staircases, and has a maximum weight limit of 19 stone. So if you’re over this weight and need a stairlift for narrow stairs, it can become an issue.
But there are also certain heavy duty stairlifts too. The Platinum Ultimate is perfect for up to 25 stone and the Bruno heavy duty stairlift carries users of up to 30 stone.
Heavy duty stairlifts are designed with larger chairs too, so there’s more room for heavier users.
Am I Too Heavy For A Stairlift – Other Considerations
Most stairlift users are well under the weight limit of a stairlift. However, if you’re looking for a stairlift it is worth taking an accurate measurement of your weight, just to be on the safe side. It is also important to check with a stairlift engineer before a purchase too. It’s important to make sure you can comfortably sit on the stairlift. We have had instances where, even though the user was below the limit of the stairlift weight capacity, they had trouble sitting correctly in the chair.
This can be an issue if you’re larger than average, and particularly if you’ve had an operation which limits leg movement.
The back to knee measurement is important for stairlift use. In the case of a knee replacement operation, for example, the toes can become a problem if you cannot place them underneath the chair.

If you’re carrying equipment, such as oxygen, for example, this can push the weight up. So if you’re near the limit already, and expect to be carrying equipment on the stairlift, double check the weight of your equipment and add it to your own weight.
Standard Straight Stairlift – Up To 25 Stone
A straight stairlift can often have a larger weight capacity than a curved one. For example, the Stannah 600 has a heavy weight model with a weight capacity of 25 stone, whereas the Stannah 260’s weight limit is only 19 stone. See also stairlift weight capacity. Due to the complexity of a curved rail, with more moving parts, weight is more limited.
However, the Platinum Ultimate is a great replacement if you have curved stairs and need a heavy duty stairlift. This model has a weight limit of 25 stone and is a pretty nimble model – especially useful if your staircase is narrow or awkward.
Here’s the Platinum Ultimate stairlift (curved) next to the Stannah 600 (straight) – both with weight capacities of up to 25 stone.

Our Highest Weighted Stairlift – Bruno
If you need a heavier capacity than these two models, or you’re pushing the limits on the above 25 stone, it’s worth opting for a heavier weight model – the Bruno heavy weight stairlift. This model has a weight limit of 30 stone and is suitable for either straight or curved stairs.

Due to the thicker, heavier rail and larger seat however, this model isn’t as nimble as some models on very narrow stairs.
