Stairlift Removal and Refit: Is It Possible?
A stairlift removal and refit may be possible if you’re moving home, or moving a pre-used lift to another user.
Sometimes it’s possible – but not always.
In this guide, we explain when stairlift removal and refit can work, when it can’t, and the important technical and legal considerations you should be aware of before making a decision.
When Can a Stairlift Be Removed and Reinstalled?
In certain circumstances, a stairlift can be safely removed and refitted, usually when:
- The stairlift is a straight stairlift
- The new staircase is also straight
- The staircase dimensions are compatible
- The stairlift model is still supported by the manufacturer
- The installation meets current safety standards
Straight stairlifts use modular rails, which makes them more adaptable than curved systems. In some cases, rails can be replaced or adjusted to suit a new straight staircase.
Other considerations include whether there’s a doorway obstructing the stairlift, what hand a stairlift is (which side of the staircase it is made for) and staircase pitch.
When Stairlift Removal and Refit Is Not Suitable
Unfortunately, stairlift refits are not interchangeable across staircase types.
🚫 Straight vs Curved Staircases
- A straight stairlift cannot be refitted to a curved staircase
- A curved stairlift cannot be refitted to a straight staircase
Curved stairlifts are manufactured with bespoke rails designed specifically for the original staircase. These rails cannot be reshaped or reused elsewhere.
🚫 Compatibility & Safety Issues
Even if the staircase type is the same, refitting may not be suitable if:
- The stairlift is an older or discontinued model
- Replacement parts are no longer available
- The staircase width, pitch, or layout differs
- The refit would compromise safety or reliability
In these cases, attempting a refit can create more problems than it solves.
Legal & Liability Considerations (Very Important)
One often-overlooked factor is liability.
When a professional company removes and refits a stairlift, they effectively become responsible for the safety and performance of that installation.
If a refitted stairlift breaks down or fails:
- The installer may become legally liable
- Ongoing breakdowns and call-outs can become an issue
- Warranty is void if a stairlift is moved
For this reason, not all refits are offered, even if they are technically possible.
