If you’re looking for Stannah stairlift troubleshooting, your Stannah stairlift likely isn’t working as it should! In this post, we will cover a few of the most common problems you might find with your Stannah stairlift and the best way to remedy them.
The most common problem is that of power. If your battery isn’t charging properly this will result in a loss of power once the battery becomes flat. This could be simply because the unit isn’t plugged in, switched on or because a breaker that has tripped.
A circuit breaker is generally found in your fuse box. This trips when there’s a power surge or short circuit and it’s designed to protect electrical devices. If this has tripped, the mains socket won’t work where your stairlift is plugged in, so it will need resetting.
There is usually a trip switch in your circuit breaker panel which might have tripped. This can usually be reset by switching back on.
Stannah Stairlift Troubleshooting – Power Faults
If there’s a problem with the power on your stairlift, there’s a few things to check:
- Check your stairlift is plugged in and switched on at the mains plug (wall plug)
- An on/off switch is located on one of the armrests. There is often a light surrounding this switch that illuminates when the power is on.
- The master power switch and key switch are usually located underneath the seat, on the carriage at either the front or side. It is round the back on a Stannah 600. The power key must be fully inserted and turned to the “on” position.
- If your circuit board has been tripped, the power may be switched off – check the circuit breaker and turn back on if so.
Stannah Stairlift Troubleshooting – Beeping/Charging
If your Stannah stairlift is beeping, it could be indicating a power issue. Other checks you can make if there’s a power is issue are:
- Unplug the connection at the wall and try another appliance to check the power socket is working properly.
- Make sure your stairlift is charging properly – park it on a power point (if curved) and clean the stairlift connection strip. If you have a straight rail, clean the copper strip on your rail which runs the length of it. If you have a curved stairlift ensure the connection on the park point is working. You can clean it with a damp cloth if it has become dirty or dusty.
- Is the beeping definitely the stairlift? Occasionally we hear from customers about beeping noises which are actually coming from a nearby smoke alarm which is running low on power! Replace the batteries in your smoke alarm if this is the issue!
If you have gone through all of these power checks and the stairlift is still not working, you could have a flat battery. Give us a call and we will organise a visit with replacement batteries. Call us on 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page.
Stannah Stairlift Troubleshooting – Obstruction/Faulty Position
Another common problem you’ll find when troubleshooting a problem with a Stannah stairlift is an obstruction or faulty position. Stannah stairlifts have safety features which sense obstructions and automatically stop when something is in the path of the lift.
So another common cause of beeping or of a Stannah stairlift not working properly is that the safety features have been triggered. This can be because of a safety edge or of the stairlift not being returned to the correct position.
- Check the track, footrest and surrounding area for obstructions. If nothing is obviously in the way, the safety mechanism may have been triggered by a knock.
- Verify the seating position and arms rest positions. Sometimes a stairlift won’t operate if the arms are not correctly positioned, or the chair isn’t set correctly. Ensure the seat is securely locked in its forward-facing position. For models with swivel levers, check that they are fully pushed down.
- If neither of these solves the issue, it could be that a safety panel has been triggered. Go around the stairlift and lightly tap each panel, to test all the safety triggers on the side panels and the footrest. Sometimes a sensor may have worn out, which will require a service or replacement part. Call our team on 0800 046 3438.
- If your stairlift has a hinged rail, a beeping sound may indicate the hinge arm is not in the correct position. This can sometimes be due to dirt or dust which is impacting the movement. Clean the moving parts and test again.
- If a sensor is triggered, you may need to reverse the stairlift’s travel position. Back it up a little and wipe clean the sensors, clean the rail and try again.
