Looking for stair lifts for difficult stairs? Whatever your staircase looks like, and whether you think you have space for a stairlift or not, there’s a couple of stairlifts which are particularly good at handling difficult staircases.
The Flow X from Thyssen, for example, and the Flow 2 stairlift are great for navigating difficult and awkward staircases. Here’s one on a very narrow staircase. As you can see, the Flow 2 is super agile and very narrow, even folding down to only 38cm wide when not in use. It can navigate staircases as narrow as 61cm wide.
Stair Lifts For Difficult Stairs – Thyssen Flow
The Thyssen Flow X is the newest version from Thyssen and, like its predecessor (the Flow 2), can handle even the most awkward of staircases.

The Flow X Stairlift
Both the Flow 2 and Flow X use patented technology. The Advanced Swivel and Levelling Technology (ASL) allows the stairlift to rotate while in motion. This feature of the Thyssen stairlifts makes it perfect for difficult and awkward stars.
Many stairlifts can struggle with tight corners, narrow stairwells and lack of room for “parking”. The Flow models can be parked on the rail, away from the base of the stairs if there’s a space issue. To use, simply call them with the remote control which is wall mounted at the top and bottom of the stairs.
Here’s a Thyssen Flow 2 which has just been installed. It’s folded up and parked on the rail, away from the base to avoid blocking the corridor. It’s also been installed on a fairly narrow staircase too.
Stair Lifts For Difficult Stairs – Avoiding Tight Corners
In this picture you can see the Flow 2 being installed and programmed. Each stairlift is programmed individually according to the staircase layout. With this install, there’s a tight corner at the top. While most stairlifts might struggle with this turn, due to the position of the knees on the stairlift, with the Thyssen Flow models it’s less of a problem.
The Flow 2 and Flow X stairlifts can face you down the stairs while you travel. This feature gives you much more leg room. With an outward facing chair, the knees become the biggest problem for tight turns and narrow stairwells. This problem is overcome by facing your legs downwards during travel. In a tight corner, the seat can also swivel to maximise space while turning, and avoiding obstacles.
Stairlifts For Difficult Stairs – Rail
The rail position too is important when considering a tight or difficult staircase. Too far from the wall, and you lose a lot of space. Too near, and the stairlift chair won’t be free to move properly. The Flow 2 and Flow X chairlifts have an unobtrusive single rail which maximises space and minimises clutter.
It can be placed very close to the wall/bannister to give the most amount of space for navigating the stairs.
Summary
The single rail and patented Advanced Swivel and Levelling Technology (ASL) make the Flow 2 stairlift and Flow X stairlifts most suitable for difficult staircases. They can navigate staircases as narrow as 61 cm and fold down to a slim 38 cm when not in use.
If you have little space for parking your stairlift at the base or top of the staircase, that’s no problem either. You can park your stairlift on the rail and call it when needed using the wall mounted remote controls.
