Are you looking for a stair lift for a split level staircase? We recently featured a case study where we fitted a stairlift to a split level staircase. In this scenario, there were three floors to contend with. Here’s a quick overview of the installation.
Stair Lift For Split Level Staircase – 3 floors
In this scenario, there were 3 floors which were all in use. So we had to be able to “park” the stairlift on each floor so it could charge. Added to the complication, the staircase was also fairly narrow. This meant options were limited. We used the Flow X stairlift because it offers the ability to navigate tricky and awkward stairs which many other makes wouldn’t cope with.
Here’s the stairlift in place after the installation:
Stair Lift For Split Levels – Placing Rail Bannister Side
For many stairlift installations, the rail is placed against the wall-side of the staircase. However, this didn’t offer the best solution because of the staircase layout. The Flow X stairlift has a single rail which can overcome a lot of potential problems with an installation.
Here you can see the rail is fitted towards the handrail side of the staircase, not the wall-side. This allowed for a shorter rail configuration and for the stairlift to be parked unobtrusively on each level at a charge point.
Other Options For Split Level Staircase
Another option for a split level staircase is to use two stairlifts. This can even work out cheaper when using reconditioned stairlifts. The Flow X stairlift is a high specification stairlift which can solve a lot of problems such as a split level staircase. But equally, you could use a cheaper option if your stairs allow it.
We recently fitted a Flow X on a very awkward staircase for similar reasons – the other models simply wouldn’t fit. You can check out our case study on stair lifts for narrow stairs here.
Here’s a quick time lapse video showing the installation. In it you can see how narrow the staircase actually was. It’s likely that no other stairlift would have been able to fit on this staircase. That’s why we will recommend the Flow X stairlift in many cases of a difficult or awkward fitting.

Summary
The Flow X stairlift is our “go-to” stairlift for multi-stories and difficult installations. It has a patented ASL (Advanced Swivel and Levelling) technology which makes it suitable for stairs which would have been too small prior to its availability.
Most stairlifts face outwards, which can make their fitting more difficult on awkward configurations. But the Flow X offers an alternative if you have a staircase which covers multiple floors or is very narrow.
