No matter whether you have had a disability throughout your whole life, or have recently become disabled, it can be incredibly easy to become disheartened when it comes to looking for work.
You may feel as though your disability is holding you back from achieving the career of your dreams, but it doesn’t have the be the case! Thanks to the Equality Act 2010 which was created off the back of the Disability Discrimination Act, employers must abide by the rules and guidelines which have been put in place to protect disabled workers and allow them to have a fair chance to gain employment in any industry.
So, whether it is your dream to become a nurse, a lawyer or even a veterinary surgeon, here’s how you can identify disability friendly employers in your chosen field!
The Two Tick Symbol
Due to the Equality Act which is in place, it’s never been easier to identify disability friendly employees, as it is the law for the employer to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to enable people with disabilities to be able to work to their fullest potential.
However, if you are looking for work and notice a symbol on the job advert or application form which depicts two ticks and the words “positive about disabled people” , this is a symbol that Jobcentre Plus awards businesses who have committed themselves to employing, training and retaining disabled staff members.
There are leaflets that are available which detail what the employers must commit to from the Jobcentre Plus branches if you would like to know more.
Check the Business Disability Forum
Another way to find a disability friendly employer is to visit the Business Disability Forum. This non-profit organisation allows businesses who have a positive attitude towards employing people with disabilities.
Take a look through the 300+ corporate members to find a company that is more likely to value your hard work and appreciate your effort more than those who just simply want to abide by the Equality Act in order not to get into trouble with the law.
Getting a job while living with a disability isn’t as impossible as many people believe it to be. It is possible and there are many different ways in which you can identify employers who will want to employ you, regardless of your disability!
