Best Straight Stairlifts For Narrow Stairs – The Stannah 600
The Stannah 600 is not only reliable, but it has superb build quality. It gives you the most amount of room on a staircase. By comparison with other straight stairlifts, the Stannah’s seating position is well back against the rail.
This means the Stannah 600 is superb when it comes to installations on narrow staircases. Here’s two Stannah’s in the workshop (pictured above) showing how narrow the seat back is. Below you can see the Stannah 600 on two staircases. Again you can see how far back on the rail it is and how important this is on these two particular staircases with the newel post in sight at the base of the stairs.
In the picture on the right (above), we actually had to remove the radiator at the bottom of the stairs in order to move the rail back. Here you can see just how close the rail is already to the wall (below).
Best Straight Stairlifts For Very Narrow Stairs – The Flow X
Most staircases are pretty standard in the UK and there’s plenty of room for a stairlift. But with certain stairs, there’s very little room.
The Stannah 600 is a good all-rounder when it comes to reliability and build quality. It can usually be installed on most UK stairs. However, occasionally we find a staircase which is too narrow even for a Stannah. In this case, we will refer to another stairlift for narrow stairs – the Flow X.
This is a straight set of stairs but a Stannah wouldn’t fit – but just look how narrow the stairs are!
The Flow X is a superb German built stairlift which is purpose created for awkward and difficult stairs. Its advanced ASL (Advanced Swivelling and Levelling) technology allows it to pivot and swivel simultaneously.
These stairlifts are often used for curved stairs, but in some situations they can be the only solution when a staircase is very narrow. The pictures above show the Flow X on a straight staircase. You can read more about this installation in our case study of it here.
The ride position of the Stannah 600 is outward facing. This means if the back to knee measurement exceeds that of the width of the staircase, it won’t fit.
So if your staircase is very narrow, the Flow X can be the only solution. With the Flow X stairlift, the ride position can be downward facing. This saves vital leg room on a very narrow staircase.
