Keeping warm with movement is one of the best things you can do when it gets cold outside. With the colder weather setting in, it is important that we all do our best to stay warm during the winter months.
Mobility and movement is one of the main ways that we can save money on our heating bills and still stay warm. But as providers of standard and curved stairlifts, we know that there are some people in our communities who have mobility issues.
That’s why we’ve put together this quick and easy guide to help the families of those individuals who are less mobile than the rest of us- or even the people themselves- to keep moving this winter, even if it’s only a walk to the shops!
How Does Movement Keep Us Warm?
When we get up and move around, the muscles in our bodies work together to get us to move in the way that we want.
This movement of the muscles (including your heart) generates heat which is spread throughout the body. Your heart recognises that your muscles are working hard to keep you going and pumps warm blood to them.
Don’t Sit Down for Long Periods
It may be tempting to sit down and get cosy watching your favourite TV shows when the temperature drops. But it’s important to get up and move around to get that warm blood pumping through your body.
Even if it’s to get up and slowly make your way into the kitchen to make a hot cup of tea, the movement will help to warm you up!
Any Kind of Movement Helps
As we’ve just mentioned, any form of movement will help.
From taking a short walk to the end of your street, to getting some simple housework such as dusting done if you are able to do it. Any form of movement that gets your muscles working and blood circulating around your body will keep you feeling toasty in the cold weather.
Even People With Limited Mobility Can Move!
If you find it difficult to move around your home or need a mobility aid to do so, then there are ways in which you can keep moving to keep yourself warm.
Even something as simple as moving your arms, legs, fingers or toes while you are in a seated or laying position can get that blood pumping! Obviously the effect will be much less apparent than having a short walk, but any movement is better than no movement!
Avoid Going Outside When Icy
Although taking a walk to the shops means that you are getting out of the house and moving some of the most important muscles in your body, it’s important to stay safe and know your own limits.
If it is incredibly cold or icy outside, then sacrifice your outdoor walk for an afternoon moving around your house instead. The last thing you need is to take a trip before you can fully enjoy the festive season!
Although it is perfectly okay to turn on the heating in your home, it’s important to recognise the other steps that you can take to make sure that you are staying warm in the colder months.
