A straight stair lift is one designed specifically for a straight staircase. Straight stairlifts are the simplest kinds of stairlifts and tend to be much cheaper than curved stairlifts. With a straight stairlift the internal mechanism of the stairlift is much simpler. But also, the fitting of a straight rail also has fewer potential problems.
So if you’re looking for a straight stair lift, you’ll likely save a lot compared one for a curved staircase.
Straight Stair Lift
Here’s a time lapse video of a straight stairlift fitting we installed in Huddersfield:
We can’t to promise to install your stairlift as quickly as in the video, but with a straight stairlift, it’s much easier. With a curved rail, there’s more measurements to take and often the rail manufacturing process can take longer too. But with straight rails they can be in stock and built to order, depending on the length of your staircase, and the model of stairlift you choose.
Straight Stair Lift – New Or Reconditioned?
The first question when choosing a stairlift type is that of your staircase. But if you have a straight staircase, the next question is that of cost. Our straight stair lifts start at £1250 (reconditioned) and £1850 new. See our stairlift prices for a more complete breakdown.
As you can see, you can save a lot if you buy a reconditioned stairlift. They are our most popular stairlifts. We offer a full 2 year warranty on our reconditioned stairlifts so you needn’t worry about the quality. We only choose the best makes and models to refurbish and we buy only the best models which are in the best condition and will last.
All reconditioned stairlifts we use are given a thorough refurbishment and given new batteries and parts where needed. Here’s one of our reconditioned Stannah 600 models being installed on a straight staircase.
Straight Stair Lift For Narrow Staircases
A few years ago we were turning away jobs because the model above wouldn’t fit on a very narrow staircase. So we looked into a different brand – The Thyssen Flow X stairlift, (now Access BDD), offers the best option in some cases where a Stannah wouldn’t fit.
A case in point is our latest case study where we fitted a reconditioned Flow 2 A (the predecessor to the Flow X). This is a great example of the perfect stair lifts for narrow stairs.
Here’s a picture of the installation:
We also did a time lapse video of it. Check it out below:
In the video you can see just how narrow the staircase was. In this particular setup, the homeowner was turned away by another company because they couldn’t fit their stairlifts in the space. The Flow X from Access BDD is the forerunner for difficult and awkward staircases like this one.

Other Considerations When Buying A Stairlift
The main thing to consider is your stairlift type – straight or curved. After that, it’s about cost and saving money if you can. We recommend our reconditioned stairlifts if you’re on a budget. You also need to consider whether the model of stairlift you choose will fit your staircase. As you have seen, certain models won’t fit on all stairs.
