Stannah Stairlift Removal Instructions – Overview

To begin with, whether you have a straight stairlift or a curved stairlift, you’ll need to remove the stairlift from the rail. This is the first step of stairlift removal. Make sure your stairlift is powered. Without power, you won’t be able to drive the stairlift off the rail.
- Unplug your stairlift from the mains. Stairlifts are mains charged, but powered from a battery in the stairlift base.
- Remove stopper at the top of the stairlift rail, and the stopping/slowing ramp. Drive the stairlift off the rail (ideally use two people here, as the unit is very heavy).
- Remove draw bolts and rail connecting pins from the rail sections.
- Unscrew rail feet from the stairs and separate the rail sections.

Common issues:
- No power – if there’s no power to a stairlift, you’ll need new batteries or to charge them. Plug the stairlift in and leave for several hours. If the battery still has no charge, you may need replacement batteries. Stairlift battery replacement varies depending on your stairlift make and model.
- Stairlift won’t drive off the rail. If the stairlift isn’t coming off, you’ve likely not removed the end stopper and/or the stopping/slowing ramp.
- Rail won’t part. If the rail sections won’t part, use a rubber mallet or a hammer to help release them. Rail sections are tightly pushed together. Make sure you remove all the joining pins and draw bolts from behind the rail sections first.

Summary
In general, to remove a stairlift start with the stairlift chair itself. Remove by driving it off the top of the rail. You will need it to be operational first, so check the batteries and replace if necessary.
Removal requires you to remove the physical stopper at the end of the rail. This is a safety device to prevent the stairlift accidentally driving off the rail during use. Also remove the slowing/stopping ramp which is situated near the top of the rail.
With the stairlift removed you can dismantle the rail a section at a time. Sections are connected with pins and draw bolts (depending on your model). Make sure you remove all the connections first, before trying to separate the sections.
The rail is screwed into the stair treads, so you’ll need to unscrew each section and pull sections apart.
