Stannah Stairlift Removal – DIY Removal Process
If you are wanting to remove the stairlift yourself, here’s a step by step removal process you can implement. Before removal, you should know the stairlift must be removed from the top of the rail.
To do this it is advisable that you have two people; one to hold and lift the stairlift upwards, the other to operate the remote control and drive the stairlift off the top of the rail.
So you will need your stairlift to be working properly. If your stairlift doesn’t run, you’ll need to charge it or replace the batteries if they are flat.
Please note, the stairlift is very heavy. It can easily be damaged during the removal process so if you are wanting to re-sell your stairlift, it’s recommended to get the professionals to remove it (see above).
Stannah Stairlift Removal – Step By Step
- Having made sure the stairlift is running properly, switch the stairlift off at the mains and unplug. The stairlift runs on two 12 volt batteries, so if they are charged they will allow you to operate the stairlift as you remove it from the rail.
- Remove the end cap at the top of the rail. This is a cosmetic plastic cap which covers the end of the rail. On the underside of the cap, there’s a clip, holding it in place. Hold down the clip and pull out the stopper cap.
- At the top of the rail you will find a charge cable linked to a plastic block. Remove this block and pull out the copper charge strip (on the back surface of the rail).
- At the top of the racking in the rail you will find a physical stopper. This is to stop the stairlift running off the top of the rail by accident. You’ll need to remove this. You’ll need a 3mm Allen/Hex key to do this and there’s 2 screw points.
- Remove the slower stopper – you’ll need an 8mm spanner. This slows the lift down at the top by telling the stairlift where the end of the rail is.It’s basically a plastic ramp on the underside of the rail. This hits a switch on the stairlift itself, telling it to slow down.
- With all the blockages removed you can now carefully lift the stairlift off the rail. Get two people to do this, one to operate the remote control and drive the lift up the rail, the other should hold and lift the stairlift off the end of the rail.
- Remember the lift is very heavy. Catching the rail end can cause damage, keep the lift level and clear it from the rail carefully as it comes off, avoiding any bumps with the undercarriage, which can cause damage. Do not let the lift chair drive off the rail without holding and lifting it, as this will cause damage to the lift as it falls.
If you are intending to re-use or sell the stairlift, we always recommend getting a professional to remove it for you. The stairlift can easily be damaged and this process requires two people ideally; one to use the remote control and the other to help remove the lift off the end of the rail.
