Stannah stairlifts are one of the most reliable stairlifts on the market, but still, Stannah stairlift faults can happen on your machine.
Here’s our troubleshooting guide.
Stannah Stairlift Faults – Stannah Stairlifts Troubleshooting
Stannah 600 – Straight Stairlift
You should find the fault code display on the side panel of your stairlift. If your code doesn’t appear in this list, consult your stairlift manual or give us a call.
Fault Code 1 – Battery/Charging Fault
Check your stairlift is turned on at the mains and on at the base unit. These switches should always be on so your battery can charge up continuously. If both switches are on there may be a charging issue with your battery. Give us a call and we can talk you through some options or get an engineer out to help.
Fault Code 2 – No Fault Found
This signifies there’s no fault found and is the normal operation mode of the stairlift. Contact an engineer if needed.
Fault Code 3 – Obstruction
The stairlift carriage is fitted with safety detectors which will trigger this fault when something is obstructing the movement of the stairlift. Reverse the stairlift and see if there’s an obstruction. The triggers are sensitive and can be set off even when there are no obvious obstructions. Test the footplate and base unit sensors by pressing them lightly to see if this alleviates the problem. Contact an engineer if this fault continues.
Fault Code 4 – Power Key
This fault code indicates that the power key is either not in the correct position, inserted correctly or in the on position. Check the key is correctly inserted and in the “on” position. The key gives you the ability to lock the stairlift to anyone without a key.
Fault Code 5 – Seat / Arm Not Positioned Correctly
This fault denotes the seat detector is not being triggered or the lower side arm is not fully down. These are safety features to make sure the stairlift doesn’t move without someone in the chair. Check the seat position and arm rest position and try again.
Fault Code 6 – Immobiliser Seatbelt not in place
If your stairlift has been fitted with an immobiliser seatbelt, it won’t function without the seatbelt fastened. Fasten the seatbelt and try again.
Fault Code 7 – Seat Not In Travelling Position
To get on or off the stairlift, the seat can swivel. But the stairlift won’t operate if the seat isn’t in the correct travelling position. Check your stairlift seat is correctly in place and that it’s not in the swivelled position.
Fault Code 9 or F – Contact your local engineer

Stannah 260 – Curved Stairlift
Common issues include charging problems, safety edge detection/activation and motor faults.
Beeping (when not in use) – Power Fault
Check the power is switched on at the mains and the key is switched on at the base unit. Check also the unit is correctly positioned in its parking space (charging point) when not in use.
Error Code 2 (With Beeping)
The stairlift isn’t charging properly, even when on charging point.
Fault Code 3 – Safety Edges activated
Check there’s no obstructions on the rail and back up the stairlift. Check safety edges by tapping through them and the foot plate to check for over-sensitive triggering.
Red LED on – Motor Fault
A red LED on the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) indicates a motor fault on the swivel or footrest of the stairlift.
Stairlift Stops Short Of Rail End
Check for rail obstructions and that the rail is clean and dry
Remote Controls Not Working
Check the remote control batteries or call an engineer if new batteries don’t solve the problem
Stairlift Running Slowly
Check the stairlift is charging correctly and both the mains and main power switch are in the “on” position. Check the stairlift is placed correctly on its charging position.
