If you’re heavier than average it’s worth checking out the stairlift weight limit of the chair you’re interested in. Too much weight on a stairlift can lead to malfunctioning, bent or broken rails, or even a complete breakdown. There’s also a potential danger. For example, if you exceed the specified maximum weight limit of the specific model you purchase. .
There are different types of stairlifts and most stairlifts are made to take a load capacity from 17 to 21 stone (300 pounds). But if you’re near that weight already or over it, you’ll be advised to get a heavy duty stairlift (bariatric). Plan ahead when purchasing a stairlift and make sure you get the right one with room to grow. It can save you a lot of problems later.
Not only can a change in weight cause problems but if you expect your mobility to decline over time it’s worth making sure your stairlift covers all bases. Sometimes that means making sure it covers all floors, in the case of multiple staircases, for example.
But your weight is a particularly important issue. Many people will put on weight over the life of their stairlift. So make sure you give yourself space to grow and get a lift which covers any potential weight gain in the future.
Stairlift Weight Limit – Heavy Duty Stairlifts
Compared to a standard stairlift capacity (of 21 stone (300 pounds)), a heavy duty stairlift can take much heavier load of up to 30 stone (420 pounds). So if you’re a little on the heavier side it’s worth chatting to one of our team.
Getting a heavy duty stairlift can give you the peace of mind that your lift will last if you’re a little heavier or if you increase in weight later down the road. It won’t let you down (literally!) – unless you’re descending the stairs of course!
Our Bruno heavy duty stairlifts are American made and much sturdier than the standard lift.
As you can see in the picture above, the lift has a sturdier structure. It uses a sturdier rail with a double contact to the chair.
A Case In Point
A recent customer called out UK Stairlifts to look at a malfunctioning stairlift. We noticed straight away that too much weight had been exerted on the lift and the rail was even buckling. This can be dangerous especially if the lift is pulling away from the rail.
So if you’re even on the unsure size of your weight make sure you go for a heavy duty stairlift for that peace of mind. Otherwise it can cost you later when you need to change your model and upgrade.
Standard stairlifts carry up to 21 stone but a heavy duty stairlift carries up to 30 stones in weight. Make sure you get the right model for you from the start and that it lasts the test of time – and of course weight!
