If you’re looking for a discreet stair lift, we think we have the answer for you! This is one of the nimblest and best looking stairlifts on the market. It even folds down to an amazing 38cm in width when not in use. So it’s great if you don’t want to make a thing out of having a stairlift, or if you want to to seamlessly blend into the background of your home, without standing out.
You can even choose from a range of fabrics and colours, so if you want to blend your stairlift seamlessly into your decor, that’s no problem!
Discreet Stair Lift – Introducing The Flow X From Thyssen
The Flow X stairlift is, in our humble opinion, the most discreet stairlift on the market. It is often the only choice on a narrow or awkward staircase. Not only does it pack a punch visually, but it’s loaded with tech which makes it more adaptable than most. See also our best stairlift for narrow stairs post.
The Flow X can navigate staircases as narrow as 61cm in width, making it more suitable for difficult fittings. It’s patented technology includes the ASL (Advanced Swivel & Levelling). This allows it to tackle very awkward staircase setups with a few clever tricks up its sleeve:
- Downward facing ride position – gives you more leg room
- Can swivel and maintain level position while moving – something most stairlifts can’t do
- Seamlessly blends into any room with a choice of colours and fabrics
Discreet Stair Lift – Single Rail Configuration
Another “ace” up the Flow X’s sleeve is its single rail configuration. Many stairlifts have a double rail, and although this can have its merits technically, it doesn’t look nearly as stylish or understated as the single rail configuration.
The Flow X has multiple options for the rail configuration depending on your staircase and the obstacles presented. In the images below you can see the “drop nose” rail, which is useful for busy corridors or to avoid doorways and corridors. We think it’s the most unobtrusive stairlift on the market!
Discreet Stairlift – Best Stairlift For Awkward Spaces
The Flow X doesn’t just look great but it solves a tonne of issues when faced with awkward spaces, difficult staircase configurations and narrow corridors with doors at the top/bottom. Here’s a picture of the predecessor to the Flow X, the Flow 2A we fitted on a narrow staircase.
This staircase was so tight, another supplier handed the job over to us, knowing us to be specialists in this area. Their stairlifts simply wouldn’t fit on the staircase.
You can watch the installation in quick-time in the video below. This is a reconditioned stairlift installation. With a recon stairlift, or an ex-display model, you can make large savings on your stairlift. See also out post about saving money on a stairlift here.

Discreet Stairlift – The Stannah
Not only do we recommend the Flow X stairlift, but we’re also fond of our Stannah stairlifts for their sleek design and space saving build quality. Here’s a Stannah on a straight staircase looking rather sleek and unobtrusive:

The Stannah 600 (straight staircase)
Stannah have hit the nail on the head when it comes to design. Their stairlifts are superb at saving space and being unobtrusive. This is perfect if you have multiple house users who need access to the stairs. Or, if your staircase is particularly narrow, it fits the bill too.
As you can see, the lift folds neatly away and it can be parked anywhere on the rail when not in use and called from the remote control. The seat position is well designed to be a space-saving as possible, giving you extra room on the stairs. This is perfect for narrow staircases and for multiple home users.
Summary – Discreet Stair Lift
So, if you’re looking for a discreet stair lift, we recommend these two models. They are of excellent quality and both are super space-saving. The Flow X is the best when it comes to difficult or narrow staircases where other stairlifts simply won’t fit.
The Stannah offers a superb build quality machine which is made to last. We offer reconditioned stairlifts which can save you a heap too!
