If you’re looking for stair lifts for terraced houses, chances are good that you’re in one, or a family member is. With a terraced house you may have less room to fit a stairlift. Perhaps you even doubt that a stairlift can be fitted in your property at all? But with modern stairlifts, you can fit a stairlift even with the minimum amount of space.
Take a look at this staircase, which was fitted with a stairlift in 2024.
Here’s another narrow staircase fitting, which shows that even with a small house, you can still fit a stairlift.
Stair Lifts For Terraced Houses
But what about if your staircase is particularly narrow? Here’s a staircase which might present a problem for some stairlifts. For one, there’s not much room at the bottom of the staircase for the stairlift to sit, when not in use. The second thing is that the staircase is very narrow, too.
However, with certain stairlifts, we can get around these two issues. We would recommend a Thyssen stairlift for this particular staircase. A Thyssen stairlift, and many modern stairlifts can position the lift anywhere on the rail when not in use.
They use a remote control device to “call” the stairlift from the top or bottom of the staircase. This means that even with minimal space for the chair to sit at the top or base of the stairs, it’s not a problem. The inactive stairlift can wait for you on the staircase itself, so it’s not in the way.
The second issue can be worked around with Thyssen stairlift which can be installed on a staircase as narrow as 61cm wide. See also minimum width for a stairlift. The Flow 2 stairlift folds down when not in use and can be stored anywhere on the rail, according to the available space.
So this can work wonders if you’re in a terraced house with very little wiggle room.
Straight Staircase Or Curved Staircase?
A straight staircase is a simpler fitting when you’re looking for stairlift installation. With a curved staircase, it can be more complicated. However, again, a stairlift can generally be fitted to a staircase however narrow or awkward it is! See also stairlifts for awkward stairs.
With a straight stairlift fitting, you’re generally looking at something like this. The Thyssen Homeglide is great for straight staircases. However, with a curved staircase, or a very narrow staircase, the issue of the legroom becomes a problem.
As you can see in the picture, the leg room is the most important factor when it comes to space, particularly on a very narrow staircase. So if this is an issue, you’ll need a stairlift which rotates to allow a downward facing motion during travel. This is where a Thyssen Flow 2 or Flow X stairlift will come in handy!
As you can see in the image above, the Flow 2 faces downwards while ascending or descending the stairs to maximise leg room.
