Chair Lift For Stairs Price – What Determines Price?
Straight stairlifts are considerably cheaper than curved stairlifts as you can see from the starting prices above. That’s because a curved stairlift requires greater customisation than a straight stairlift. With a straight, you can use an “off the shelf rail” and simply cut it to size. With a curved stairlift, the rail is manufactured specifically to the exact measurements of your staircase.
Other factors include specialist stairlifts which are made specifically for very narrow or awkward fittings. They have greater mobility than most stairlifts and are able to pivot, tilt and climb with greater dexterity for particularly difficult, awkward or narrow stairs. Rail length is another factor in price too. A longer staircase will generally add to the cost. For curved staircases, the complexity and number of bends and turns in the rail also affects cost. You may need a heavy duty stairlift if you’re over a certain weight capacity which can add to the cost.
Stairlift optional extras and special features are also a factor.
Chair Lift For Stairs Price – A Few Examples
Here’s a few examples of stairlift costs including warranty and installation. All our reconditioned stairlifts come with a full 2 year warranty, covering you for parts, labour and call outs.
This was an interesting installation which required a specialist stairlift (the Flow X) due to the narrow width of the staircase and the tricky bend at the top and bottom. There were doors at the top of the stairs so the stairlift had to be parked on the landing next to a radiator.
This installation was £7,950 for a new Flow X custom made for the stairs.
A Reconditioned Straight Stairlift
By contrast our reconditioned stairlifts are considerably cheaper than buying new. With a straight stairlifts, such as in this next example, you can see there’s a big price difference to a brand new specialist stairlift for narrow/awkward stairs.
This installation was a more common one – a straight staircase. This installation was £1,550 and was a reconditioned stairlift. You can read more about this one in the case study: straight stairlift on curved stairs.
A Reconditioned Curved Stairlift – Stairlift Prices
Here’s another stairlift price example of one of our installations. In this one, it’s a curved stairlift (reconditioned). Curved stairlifts are usually more expensive than straight ones, as mentioned already. This stairlift was £3,850.
A Reconditioned Stairlift For Very Narrow/Awkward Stairs
Sometimes with a very awkward staircase, you’ll need a brand new stairlift if we don’t have the specialist models in stock in our reconditioned range. But if you’re lucky, we’ll find a pre-used stairlift which is the perfect solution. A reconditioned stairlift can save you thousands, especially if you need a specialist stairlift for your staircase.
Here’s an example of one of our installations on a tricky staircase. As you can see, this one is quite narrow with an awkward bannister rail. In some cases, we can remove the bannister rail if safe to do so. This stairlift installation was £4,250 including 2 year warranty. This was a reconditioned model.
Our Most Expensive Installation To Date
Here’s a particularly unusual installation we carried out in Plymouth, UK. This was a four-storey, steel staircase which was also a spiral staircase! Not our usual day! How Much Will Your Stairlift Cost?
As you can see, the cost of a stairlift can vary according to a number of criteria. As a recap, these are the main things which determine stairlift cost:
- Whether your staircase is straight or curved (curved will cost more)
- If you need a specialist stairlift – for example for a difficult fitting or a heavy duty stairlift if you’re over the weight limit for a standard lift.
- Other requirements such as auto-swivel and other optional extras
- Whether you buy a new or reconditioned stairlift.

Saving Money On A Stairlift – Options
Some stairlifts are cheaper than others but we wouldn’t recommend using the cheapest models as these can cost you later in call out charges and repairs. “Buy cheap, buy twice” is particularly relevant when it comes to stairlifts, as we well know over our years in the stairlift industry.
We choose only the best makes and models for our stairlifts but you can save money on a stairlift by buying a reconditioned stairlift. Reconditioned stairlifts are pre-used stairlifts which have been professionally refurbished to a high standard. All our reconditioned stairlifts are carefully chosen from the best makes and models. These models are known to last which means fewer issues, less problems for our customers and less call-outs for us!
In certain circumstances we have placed a straight stairlift on a curved staircase, to offer a cheaper option to customers – however this is only when there is no compromise on safety, which is our top priority.
